Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald called quarterback Geno Smith “probably the toughest player I’ve ever been around” after Smith left Sunday’s 30-13 loss to the Green Bay Packers with a knee injury.

“It was so bad he couldn’t get back into the game,” Macdonald said. “We’ll do all the testing tomorrow and kind of figure it out as we go along. But right now structurally it looks like it’s fine, but we need to get it photographed and all that stuff.”

In the third quarter, Smith landed awkwardly after throwing the ball and trying to avoid contact from Packers linebacker Edgerrin Cooper. He was unable to return as Sam Howell took over the quarterback position.

The Seahawks did not provide any information about Smith’s injury, only announcing midway through the game that he was questionable. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the two-time Pro Bowler is scheduled for additional testing on Monday.

Smith’s performance has steadily declined since his Comeback Player of the Year campaign in 2022. While his 258.8 passing yards per game in 14 games are his second-highest ever, his 13 interceptions also represent his second-highest total. His passer rating of 89.9 and QBR of 52.8 are also well below theirs, according to Pro Football Reference Equivalents of 2022 (100.9 and 62.8).

However, Sunday showed how much Seattle will miss the 34-year-old if he has to miss time due to his knee injury. Howell finished 5 of 14 for 24 yards and an interception against Green Bay.

Smith’s toughness is unquestionable, but no one can overcome a serious knee injury if that’s what the tests indicate for them.
