Seahawks overcome mistakes and earn comeback win against Jets

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. – Both teams were sloppy, committing multiple turnovers and costly penalties, but the Seahawks were able to overcome their early mistakes while the Jets couldn’t, and the result was a 26-21 Seahawks victory that cleared the score of Seattle improved 7-5.

Despite trailing 14-0 and 21-7, the Seahawks were able to grab the lead, thanks largely to some big attacks from their defense. As a result, they improved to 4-1 on the road and extended a one-game lead over the Cardinals in the NFC West following Arizona’s loss to Minnesota.

Here are five quick reactions to Sunday’s win at MetLife Stadium:

  1. The big cat is on the move, and this time he better be named Defensive Player of the Week.

Last week, despite a dominant performance, Leonard Williams missed out on NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors because the award went to teammate Coby Bryant, who hit a 69-yard pick-six in the win over the Cardinals.

It remains to be seen whether Williams will win the award this week, but if he doesn’t, it won’t be for lack of a big performance. At a moment when it seemed like the game was slipping out of Seattle’s hands due to several special teams errors, Williams came up with a huge and unexpected play.

After lining up at defensive tackle, Williams dropped into coverage, a move that fooled Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who threw a pass that Williams tipped and then intercepted. And Williams wasn’t content with winning – he started running, and in the building where he spent the first eight and a half seasons of his career as a member of the Jets and Giants, Williams ran for the first 92-yard touchdown of his career.

The play was great not only because it was a rare pick-six for a defensive tackle, but also because it prevented the Jets from building a 21-7 lead after a Seahawks turnover, allowing the Seahawks to to stay in the game and ultimately take the lead in the fourth quarter.

Williams later added two sacks, the last of which helped the Jets to a long fourth down attempt with the game on the line, a play that ended with an incomplete pass.

Oddly enough, Williams’ pick-six was the fourth long interception return touchdown the Seahawks have scored in this stadium, along with a 94-yarder against the Giants by Brandon Browner, Malcolm Smith’s 69-yarder in Super Bowl XLVIII and Devon Witherpsoon’s 97-yarder against the Giants last season.
