As one of Netflix’s most anticipated releases of 2024 Squid game returns for its second season this week. Lead actor Lee Jung-jae is back in the arena and his character is determined to put an end to the deadly game once and for all.

The first season of the South Korean drama introduced the deadly game, but the second season sees former winner Seong Gi-hun return three years later with a new mission: to end it for good. As Player 456, he must navigate a series of new games – as well as the infamous Red Light, Green Light from Season 1 – while facing the Front Man, the sinister mastermind behind them Squid game.

Jung-jae told Netflix’s Tudum that his character is not the same man viewers saw in Season 1. “I had a lot of opportunities where I was able to bring that goodness of heart to the character (in Season 1).

Squid game Season 2 premieres on Netflix on Thursday, December 26th at 3pm ET/Midnight PT. All seven episodes can be streamed simultaneously.

What will Squid game Season 2 Be About?

“Three years after winning Squid Game, Player 456 has given up on going to the States and returns with a new resolution in mind,” reads the official synopsis for season two. “Gi-hun once again delves into the mysterious survival game and launches another game of life and death, bringing together new participants to win the prize of 45.6 billion won.”

During Netflix’s Fall Edit event in November, showrunner Hwang Dong-hyuk revealed why Gi-hun returned to Squid Game after narrowly surviving the first time and winning the grand prize of 45.6 billion Korean won.

“He wants to return to a ‘normal’ so-called life. (But) there is something inside him that is already broken and he cannot go back to the way he was before,” he explained. Although Gi-hun wants to reconnect with his daughter, “he understands… that he has changed in ways that are no longer possible.”
