SEC teams in final College Football Playoff top 25 for 2024 season

It’s time to set the College Football Playoff field for the 2024 college football season.

For the first time in its history, the bracket was expanded to 12 teams, adding additional meaning and meaning to Saturday’s conference championship games. No. 1 Oregon, No. 5 Georgia, No. 10 Boise State, No. 13 Arizona State and No. 17 Clemson all won their respective conference titles and are candidates for the playoff field.

But now there are a lot of questions for the teams that either lost in the conference championship or didn’t reach the title game at all. How far behind does Texas fall in its second loss to Georgia this season? The Bulldogs defeated the Longhorns 22-19 in overtime despite losing quarterback Carson Beck in the second half.

How many teams are participating in the 2024 College Football Playoff?

The playoffs consist of the five top-ranked conference champions and seven overall contenders.

The top four ranked conference championship teams will be seeded 1-4 and receive a first-round playoff bye. The final champion receives an automatic bid but must play a first-round match. If the fifth highest ranked champion finishes outside the top 12, they will be ranked 12th overall.

From then on, the remaining overall teams are seeded 5-12, with the 5-8 seeds each playing a first-round game on campus against the 9-12 seeds. The first round winners advance to the quarterfinals and play seeds 1-4 in their respective bowl games, with bowl games assigned to higher seeds based on historical bowl ties.

As the CFP Committee has noted, teams that have already played each other in the playoffs will not be excluded by any special agreements and the group will not be reseeded. Once the playoff round is determined, first seeding will proceed to completion.
