Over 80 years later, December 7, 1941 is a date that still lives in infamy.

The attack on Pearl Harbor sparked the start of World War II for the United States and left an indelible scar on the American psyche comparable only to the attacks of September 11th.

According to the National Park Service, 2,403 military personnel and civilians were killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Efforts to identify the victims of the attack continue to this day.

The attack led to one of the darkest spots in modern American history when President Franklin D. Roosevelt responded by invoking the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to imprison more than 100,000 Japanese Americans, many of them U.S. citizens, in concentration camps.
