See which areas could see snow and ice

A massive winter storm is expected to bring “significant winter weather” from the Central Plains to the Mid-Atlantic beginning later this week.

The National Weather Service said Thursday morning that confidence is growing that the storm will hit the Central Plains late Saturday, the Ohio and Tennessee valleys on Sunday and the Mid-Atlantic region early next week.

The weather service says heavy lake snow is expected in areas downwind of the Great Lakes over the next few days, with 6 to 12 inches of snow possible through Saturday morning, with larger amounts possible in isolated cases.

Additionally, a low pressure system moving across the central U.S. on Thursday is expected to produce light snow from Iowa across the Ohio Valley into the central Appalachians on Friday. According to the NWS, snowfall accumulations of 6 to 12 inches are possible across the central Appalachians.

The weather service said areas in the Central Plains and Mississippi Valley, particularly along and north of Interstate 70, have a high chance of at least 6 inches of snow falling. Further south, there are concerns for potentially significant sleet and freezing rain in eastern Kansas and the Ozarks, extending east into the Tennessee and Lower Ohio valleys this weekend, according to the NWS.

“Some icing may also occur in parts of the southern Appalachians on Sunday,” the weather service said.

AccuWeather meteorologists say a severe snowstorm is forecast across “much of Nebraska into southern and central Ohio and West Virginia” and that “enough snow for shoveling and plowing (3 to 6 inches or more) is expected over about will extend 1,000 miles from the west. “Nebraska to West Virginia.”

Cities where many inches of snow are expected include St. Louis, Kansas City, Indianapolis and Cincinnati. According to AccuWeather, the areas most likely to see the highest snowfall accumulations are somewhere between northern Missouri, west-central Illinois and northeast Kansas.

Cold temperatures are coming across the central and eastern US

The NWS also says high pressure is expected to build over the Great Plains, sending “cold arctic air” across the central and eastern U.S. through the weekend.

AccuWeather meteorologists warn that fresh arctic air currents are “poised to crash into the central and eastern United States,” with each burst having the potential to bring colder air farther south than the previous round.
