Serena Williams addresses ‘haters’ and denies bleaching skin

Serena Williams denied rumors that she had bleached her skin while also calling out the “haters” who claimed she had done so.

During an Instagram Live on Monday, December 2, the 23-time Grand Slam champion, 43, addressed claims that she intentionally altered her complexion after recently sharing a video of herself at a school event with her husband Alexis Ohanian and her two daughters Olympia, 7, and Adira, 15 months.

While doing a makeup tutorial for her brand Wyn Beauty (pronounced “Win”), the former athlete saw the perfect opportunity to speak out on the topic.

“And then I applied this exact neutral color, which is actually my skin color, and no, for you haters out there, I don’t bleach my skin,” Williams said as she applied her glam.

“There is something called sunlight, and in that sunlight different colors are created,” she continued.

The tennis star explained that in the now-viral video from late November, she was volunteering at her daughter’s game and was wearing “stage makeup” while filming the clip.

“Yes, I’m bringing this to your attention because it’s ridiculous,” Williams said, before explaining that she is proud of who she is.

“Everyone says, ‘Oh, she bleached her skin.’ “I’m a dark, black woman, and I love who I am and I love the way I look,” the professional athlete continued, adding that this kind of change is “just not my thing.”

Williams has no issues with others lightening her skin, but she reiterated that it’s not a procedure she’s interested in.

“And if people do it, it’s their thing and they have every opportunity and they should. I don’t judge, but you do,” she said.

“But that’s what this world is about, and I stay in my lane – the unbiased lane, and I keep it. But no, I don’t actually bleach my skin. “So can we sort this out somehow?” she concluded.

Williams was honest about the work she has done in the past.

In June, the mother of two shared an Instagram video of herself undergoing radiofrequency treatment to tone her stomach at a Paris spa.

“Being okay with taking time for myself is something I’ve always struggled with,” she captioned the post. “Finally it was okay for me to take an hour (during naptime 🙈) to spend with my kids and work to do something for myself.”

The video showed her lying on a table while the electromagnetic device was applied to her stomach.

“I wasn’t sure of my gut,” Williams admitted, saying she had the work done during a girls’ trip.

“I can see progress as my skin has returned to normal and my confidence has returned. “Listen, my body will never be the same, but neither will I because I have two amazing lights in my life,” she concluded, tagging her daughters in the post.
