Seven blazes rage across California as satellites capture the destruction

The Palisades Fire

A home owned by actor and comedian Billy Crystal was among more than 1,000 structures destroyed by wildfires across Los Angeles, including a major blaze that broke out in the Hollywood Hills.

Man dies trying to save his family’s home from flames

One of the five people who died in the Los Angeles fires died while trying to save his home from the flames, his sister said Wednesday.

Victor Shaw, 66, told his sister Shari Shaw he wanted to stay behind and fight the flames as she made the painful decision to leave her family’s Altadena-area home.

“When I went back in and called his name, he didn’t answer,” Shari Shaw told local station KTLA. “I had to get out because the embers were so big and flying like a firestorm that I had to save myself. I looked behind me and saw the house in flames and I had to leave.”

Al Tanner, a friend of Shaw’s, later found his body on the driveway with a garden hose in his hand. “It looked like he was trying to save the house that his parents had lived in for almost 55 years,” he told KTLA.

At least six fires are burning across Los Angeles

Celebrities are in shock after friends and loved ones “lost everything”.

Fires in and around Los Angeles have destroyed the homes of numerous celebrities, including singer Mandy Moore and reality star Paris Hilton.

Moore lost her home in the Altadena neighborhood, about 30 miles east of the Palisades. “Honestly, I am shocked and numb for all that so many have lost, including my family. My children’s school is gone. Our favorite restaurants, leveled. So many friends and loved ones have also lost everything,” Moore wrote on Instagram alongside a video of destroyed streets in the foothills suburb.

Cary Elwes, the star of The Princess Bride, said his family was safe but their home burned in the Palisades waterfront fire. “Sadly we lost our home, but we are grateful to have survived this truly devastating fire,” Elwes wrote on Instagram.

President cancels trip to Italy to focus on response
