Several centimeters of snow are expected near St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – We are on track for our first snow of the 2024-25 winter season on Saturday for northern portions of the St. Louis region. The snow will move northwest to southeast Saturday morning and continue throughout the day. Snowfall rates will be moderate at times.

Areas south of a line from Rolla to Potosi to Perryville, Missouri are unlikely to see much or any snow. In this zone, temperatures will be above freezing for most of the day and light rain is likely.

Key points:

  • First snow of the season Saturday for the north St. Louis area.
  • Peak snowfall between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. with moderate snow rates.
  • Southern areas (Rolla, Potosi, Perryville) will likely see rain, not snow.
  • Snowfall: 2 to 4 inches along I-70/64, up to 5 inches in some places.
  • Cold Sunday/Monday, with lows in the teens and highs around 30°C.

How much snow is forecast?

Meteorologist Chris Higgins is predicting a band of snow of 2 to 3 inches, with some spots across the region possibly reaching 4 inches. It would cover the northern half of St. Louis County and parts of the Metro-East.

The main event starts at around 10 a.m. and lasts until early afternoon. Most of the accumulating snow will fall and quickly shift to Illinois by late afternoon.

Where will the snow fall?

The heaviest snowfall will occur along I-70 and the Missouri River in Missouri and extend slightly into Illinois along I-70/I-64. Due to the speed of the system, accumulations will be lower in Illinois, with much of the area experiencing 2 inches of dust. Parts of Gasconade, Franklin and Jefferson counties will likely see a sharp boundary between areas with and without snow, with south from Sullivan to Ste. there is little to no snow. Genevieve line.

I-70 traffic between St. Louis and Columbia will see the greatest impact, with slushy roads expected during heavy snowfall. Drive carefully as any fall of snow or ice can create slippery areas.

A winter weather advisory was issued for the city of St. Louis Saturday from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

MoDOT released the following statement Friday evening, which reads in part:

Department of Defense officials are keeping a close eye on the upcoming winter weather, which is expected to intensify across the St. Louis metropolitan area on the morning of Saturday, Nov. 30. Staffing for the first snowfall of the season will begin overnight Friday, with crews ready to clear state-maintained highways and roads as conditions warrant.

MoDOT urges all drivers to plan ahead, especially as many are traveling over the holidays. Drivers should exercise extra caution during and after precipitation: slow down depending on the weather, buckle up, and avoid distractions like using a hand-held device while driving – that’s the law. Travelers are also urged to take extra caution on elevated surfaces such as bridges and overpasses.

In the middle of the week the temperatures improve, with maximums approaching around 50 degrees.
