Competition director Liam McNamara pointed out that first-time entrants make up half of the list and several of them are second-generation big wave surfers, including McNamara’s son Landon McNamara, Mason Ho, son of pro surfer Michael Ho, and Chad Keaulana, who follows them follow in the footsteps of father Brian and grandfather “Buffalo”, both legendary watermen.

The competition continues with five more heats.

“Everyone can still win,” McNamara said. “It was a dream come true for her. When that big event happens, they put everything aside and focus on it. That is their goal. This is her dream.”

If Luke Shepardson finishes the day as winner, he will become the first to win the competition twice.
