Several storms are heading toward Idaho

It will be an active weather week across the state thanks to a persistent atmospheric flow that will benefit much of Idaho. Look for the next burst of moisture to move into the region on Tuesday. This will bring valley rain and mountain snow. It will be sunny to partly cloudy on Christmas Day. However, the next surge of subtropical air will bring periods of valley rain and mountain snow starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend. This will not be a unified storm. But we will see rain showers coming again and again. Subtropical air moving in from the southwest will keep our temperatures above normal for this time of year, reaching highs of over 40C this week. We should be in our 30s. But at least we will continue to see mountain snow.

When will this warm pattern change? It all depends on the positioning of the jet stream. Currently the current is moving directly from west to east. This low-hanging jet stream continues to take advantage of the mild air from the central Pacific. Eventually the jet stream will change direction and come from the northwest. This will ultimately bring in colder air from Canada and the Gulf of Mexico. But for the next 7-10 days, milder air will be the driving force in our forecast.
