A multi-day severe weather event will threaten several southern states this weekend during the busy holiday travel season. Strong tornadoes, damaging straight-line winds, large hail and heavy rainfall are a concern on both Saturday and Sunday.

This comes on the heels of multiple tornadoes that hit Texas and Louisiana on Thursday. a reminder that tornadoes can occur at any time of the year.

Here’s what you need to know if stormy weather affects your travel plans or holiday celebrations.

Forecast for Saturday

The threat of severe storms will extend from East Texas to the lower Mississippi Valley and parts of the Tennessee Valley.

NOAA’s Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has highlighted an elevated severe weather area (level 3 out of 5) extending across portions of eastern Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. This area includes places like Monroe, Louisiana and Jackson as well as Hattiesburg, Mississippi.

The SPC warns that strong tornadoes (EF2 or higher) could occur in this corridor if the right mix of atmospheric components comes together.

Warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico will help fuel these storms in advance of an approaching cold front. Early in the day we were able to see some developing storms in the vulnerable areas ahead of the main line of storms.

The risk of severe storms increases in the afternoon and evening hours.

Heavy rainfall, large hail, damaging winds and tornadoes are also possible from East Texas to Georgia and north to Tennessee.

Other cities at risk of storms include: Houston, Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, Shreveport, Baton Rouge and New Orleans.

There could be delays at airports in and around Houston, Shreveport, New Orleans, Jackson, Little Rock and New Orleans on Saturday. And road driving on Interstates 10, 20, 49, 55, 59 can be dangerous at times.

If you are traveling by car, be aware that flash flooding may occur due to heavy rainfall.

Forecast for Sunday

Severe storms will continue to move eastward into much of the Southeast on Sunday and extend northward into portions of the upper Ohio Valley and central Appalachians.

We could see storms developing in parts of Georgia and the Florida Panhandle early in the morning, then moving eastward throughout the day.

The area with the greatest chance of severe weather extends from eastern Georgia to the Carolinas and southern Virginia. Augusta, Georgia, Columbia, South Carolina, and Charlotte and Raleigh, North Carolina are some of the cities in this threat area.

There could be delays at airports including Atlanta, Charlotte and Raleigh on Sunday. And traveling on Interstates 10, 20, 75 and 85 can be dangerous at times.
