Severe storms knock down trees and damage homes in Cobb County

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) – Residents of a Cobb County neighborhood woke up to heavy damage Sunday morning after a series of severe storms ripped through north Georgia.

Several trees fell on homes on Corral Drive and Bridal Path. The emergency services are also dealing with a gas leak from an unknown source.

Mark Coleburn, who has lived in the area for 34 years, has worked long hours to help his affected neighbors. He said locals heard hissing and smelled gas in the air.

“It’s just so sad to see people have worked so hard for all the things they have and in one second it’s destroyed,” he said. “We just hope it hasn’t ignited because a house could explode.”

Residents of a home on Corral Drive said they felt the house shake around 4 a.m. and were awakened by it. When they entered the living room, they saw that a tree had crashed into the ceiling, exposing the rafters and insulation.

“I honestly don’t feel anything at the moment. I feel numb,” said homeowner Rudy Ramirez. “It happened, and now we just have to deal with it.”

The family said they were grateful no one was injured.

“It’s just devastating, but we’re OK,” said Ramirez’s son, Ruben.

Outside Ramirez’s home, Atlanta News First saw several trees on several properties being uprooted. Several other houses and a car were also smashed by trees.

“You have to get over that numb feeling of, ‘Wow, we’re not immune to anything,’ and when it happens you’re like, ‘We’re fine,'” Ramirez said. “Things can be cleaned up.”

The storm system brought heavy rain and strong winds that swept through the area around 4 a.m. Coweta, Fayette, Meriwether and Spalding counties were temporarily under a tornado warning, and the National Weather Service later confirmed an EF-0 tornado in Fayette County with estimates of winds around 80 mph.
