Severe Warning Day: The winter storm continues

A winter storm warning remains in effect for Sunday and Monday.

I’m WLKY meteorologist Suzy Anne Horgan. So we saw quite a bit of snow this morning on your Sunday, and unfortunately we also saw a hell of a lot of accidents on the road, so we definitely want you to take it easy. If you have to leave the house and go to work, we know that of course many people have to do that. That’s why we have a winter storm warning in place for the rest of the day and into tomorrow. We will likely see a wide variety of precipitation types. Obviously, we will likely see some areas of very heavy snowfall on the order of 1 to 2 inches per hour during the morning hours. We expect healthy snowfall. You can see. 5 to 10 inches maybe more as we travel through the Louisville Metro and point north. Then 3 to 6 inches of snow is possible in the central portions of the WLKY viewing area, with 1 to 3 further south. We are also concerned about the possibility that we could see some ice, perhaps 25% to perhaps even 3/4 inch of ice in some remote areas, which of course could be very problematic. We will be mindful that this may cause problems on some power lines, particularly as we anticipate windy weather. This extensive storm system will continue to spread across the region later today. We will likely see a change to this wintry mix at some point, which will continue to prevail and will likely give us some sleet, also the possibility of freezing rain and maybe even just some light rain. As we head into the overnight hours we’ll see things ease up a bit, but then we’ll keep an eye out for more opportunities for precipitation as we move through Monday morning. We will likely see mostly just snow as there will be additional accumulations throughout the day on Monday due to the type of precipitation. From Tuesday onwards there will only be very cold conditions. Temperatures are expected to be in the 20s on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Another chance for snow showers as we head into Friday.
