Severe weather delays hundreds of flights at Charlotte airport

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Hundreds of flights at Charlotte Douglas International Airport were delayed or canceled Sunday as severe weather struck the Southeast, including the threat of heavy rain, gusty winds and isolated tornadoes in the Charlotte area.

Sunday is a weather-related day for the Charlotte region. Multiple tornado warnings were issued throughout the greater Charlotte area as the first line of storms quickly moved across the Carolinas. Thousands of power outages were reported, with trees and power lines toppling due to gusty winds.

Chief meteorologist Brad Panovich said he expects more flight delays during Sunday’s thunderstorms due to gusty winds and heavy rain.

A tornado warning is in effect for Alexander, Burke, Cabarrus, Catawba, Cleveland, Gaston, Iredell, Lincoln, Mecklenburg, Rowan, Rutherford and Union counties until 1 p.m. Chester, Lancaster and York counties in South Carolina are also under a tornado watch until 1 p.m

The flight delays on Sunday came after hundreds of flights were canceled from the schedule on Saturday due to the weather. WCNC Charlotte spoke with several people who were stuck at the airport for hours trying to catch connecting flights home.

“I was about two hours late, two and a half I think, plus an hour layover,” Kasey Kane said.
