Shane Beamer is getting closer to hiring an offensive coordinator

GamecockCentral.com has learned that Mike Shula is expected to be the next offensive coordinator of South Carolina football.

The program has a vacancy at the position after Dowell Loggains, who spent the last two seasons in the position at Columbia, left the position to become head coach at Appalachian State.

Shula spent the 2024 season with the title of Senior Offensive Assistant on Shane Beamer’s staff, working closely with the quarterbacks, including redshirt freshman standout LaNorris Sellers.

On game days, Shula stood on the sideline with Sellers while Loggains directed plays from the penalty area.

His promotion to the role of offensive coordinator would provide continuity with Sellers, who is expected to be one of the best quarterbacks in the country during the 2025 season.

The veteran coach served as offensive coordinator several times, most notably with the Carolina Panthers from 2013 to 2017. During this time, he worked with Cam Newton, who became the NFL’s MVP in 2015. The Panthers advanced to the Super Bowl during that season. Following the 2015 season, he was named the league’s Offensive Coordinator of the Year by PFF.

Shula also was a game manager for the NFL’s Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Giants and served as head coach at the University of Alabama from 2003 to 2006.

A former quarterback for the Crimson Tide, Shula began his coaching career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1988. He also served as an assistant in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, New York Giants, Denver Broncos and Buffalo Bills.
