Shane Steichen on the Colts’ lateness: “Not everyone is going to be on time every time”

After Sunday’s playoff-disqualifying loss to the Giants, former Colts punter Pat McAfee started as a teamnoting that the Colts are currently struggling with issues of work ethic, commitment, tardiness, etc.

Colts coach Shane Steichen was asked about the criticism by reporters on Monday.

“I think with every team, right, Not everyone will be on time every time“But there is responsibility and the boys are held to a standard and that is talked about in the house,” said Steichen. “And I don’t believe that. And I think, you know, with everything – I think Pat, you know, he’s an alumni who wants the Colts to do well, just like all of our fans want us to do well, and if the quality Not reaching the playoffs is frustrating. So it’s frustrating for a lot of people, myself included. And that’s when we talked about raising the standard so that we don’t find ourselves in this situation.”

Here’s the thing about responsibility. The aim is to change behavior. If that doesn’t happen, it doesn’t work.

The very fact that Steichen would accept delays as inevitable underscores the cultural problems McAfee complained about. They tolerate it, at best with a small fine, but it doesn’t bring about any major changes.

Whatever the Colts are doing, it’s not working, be it in terms of timeliness or on-field performance. The only question is whether and to what extent the ownership structure will change.
