Shawn Mendes debuts on a Billboard chart he has never achieved before

Shawn Mendes has been a global superstar for a decade. By this point in their careers, many musicians have already accomplished most of what they will do, as moments in the spotlight can be painfully short for too many talents. The Canadian singer-songwriter is still working and still has a sizable fan base – even if he’s not at the same level he once was.

The superstar’s new album Shawn Mendes debuts on several charts in the United States this week, bringing the singer back to the top spot on many of them. His latest attempt, which is simply named ShawnHe also manages to introduce him to a ranking he had never achieved before – and it almost helped him conquer it on the first try.

Shawn brings Mendes onto the Americana/Folk Albums charts for the first time in his career. The semi-self-titled project lands at No. 2 on Billboard’s list of most consumed projects that fit under either the label “Americana” or “Folk”… or, as is often the case, both at the same time.

Only one bestseller beats Mendes to secure his first No. 1 spot. Noah Kahan continues to dominate the Americana/Folk albums charts with his breakthrough full-length Embroidery season.

Kahan has recently become a powerhouse in the American music business, particularly on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart. Embroidery season has now been controlling the genre-specific balance for 32 weeks. It has spent 76 rounds somewhere on the 25-tier leaderboard over its lifetime, and the fact that it is still at the top – beating high-profile names like Mendes – is impressive.

Mendes is responsible for half of all debuts on the Americana/Folk albums charts during this period. Country legend Dwight Yoakam is also releasing a new set as his new project Brighter days enters at number 21. Adrianne Lenker deserves praise Songs/Instruments returns to number 25.

Shawn opens with just under 24,000 equivalent units moved across the U.S., 13,600 of which were actual purchases, and that total helps push it into the top 10 in other rankings besides the Americana/Folk Albums list. The project reaches the highest level in both top album sales (#8) and vinyl album sales (#6). It also debuts on the Billboard 200, although lower, at number 26.
