Shawn Mendes talks about his love life with John Mayer on a radio show

The singer revealed on John Mayer’s SiriusXM radio show that he was “dating someone” just two days before “hanging out with my ex.”

Shawn Mendes isn’t done being a songwriter yet. The singer recently appeared on John Mayer’s SiriusXM radio show “How’s Life” and revealed several intimate details about his love life.

When Mayer asked Mendes about his trauma when it comes to relationships, especially in public, the singer was candid. “I always think about whether it’s worth talking about the details in situations like this,” Mendes began. “For example, if you’re dating someone two days before you’re going to meet your ex and you announce two days beforehand that you’re going to hang out with your ex,” he added.

When asked to elaborate on the situation, Mendes explained: “So I’m dating someone. “Two days before I hang out with my ex, I say, ‘I’m going to hang out with my ex because I have unresolved feelings,'” Mendes said. “Maybe it could have been two weeks instead of two days.”

While Mendes didn’t name any names during his conversation with Mayer last summer, there were rumors that the singer was part of a love triangle between Sabrina Carpenter and his ex-girlfriend Camila Cabello. Several from Carpenter Short and sweet Songs seemed to reference the A-list trio. On “Sharpest Tool,” Carpenter sang about a man she met who “found God in his ex’s house,” and hinted at the same tricky situation on “Coincidence.”

Mendes and Cabello dated from 2019 to 2021 before getting back together for a few months in 2023. While Mendes and Carpenter’s romance was never confirmed, the two were spotted out and about in LA in early 2023.

“It’s a strange feeling to feel like you’re being written about,” Mendes told Mayer, who has also inspired many breakup songs. The two talked about the importance of learning from mistakes and looking forward to the future. “The biggest lesson I’ve learned is that no one gets out of this life without getting hurt, and no one gets out of this life without hurting someone.”
