Shedeur Sanders Giants Cleats Explained: Why Colorado QB had custom cleats made for the Alamo Bowl

The NFL Draft process can be long and arduous, but Colorado QB Shedeur Sanders appears to have a goal in mind.

Following comments from Sanders himself and incoming Colorado rookie Julian Lewis alluding to the NFL’s New York Giants, Sanders made a fashion statement before the Alamo Bowl by placing red and blue cleats in his locker.

As it turns out, these cleats are more than just a subtle hint at Sanders’ potential NFL landing spot. In fact, they are custom-made cleats with the Giants logo on them, the clearest sign yet that Sanders would at least be willing to play in New York.

Here’s a look at Sanders’ custom Giants cleats and what they mean.

Sanders hinted in the days leading up to the Alamo Bowl that his cleats would provide a clue as to which team would take him in the 2025 NFL Draft.

β€œWe know where we’re going, baby… We know where we’re going, baby. You’ll see them in the boots later this week,” Sanders told his brother Shilo in a video during practice.

When his brother told him that he didn’t really know where he wanted to go and that a team can always move up, Sanders replied, “You can’t go higher than one.”

Through 15 games, a team stands alone with the worst record in the NFL. The Giants (2-13) only need to lose their final two games to become the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft thanks to the Raiders’ Week 16 win over the Jaguars.

While the Giants could slide down the draft order with a win, Sanders’ comments and cleats are a sign that he would be excited to play for the downtrodden franchise, although Deion Sanders’ previous comments suggested he might try to keep his son away from certain teams.

Of course, the studs could be a way to achieve just that. Sanders could try to get to New York months before the actual decision is made β€” and before the Giants even know whether they will have the first pick.

Saturday wasn’t the first time Sanders and the Giants have come into contact, as new Buffaloes quarterback Julian Lewis referred to the senior as the “future quarterback of the New York Giants” ahead of the Alamo Bowl.

The Giants may not be the most desirable franchise, but the New York market is. While Miami’s Cam Ward is also poised to become the No. 1 quarterback, Sanders already appears to be actively pursuing the No. 1 pick.

Mock draft projection by Shedeur Sanders

Sanders and Ward are widely considered the top two quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders is ranked No. 8 overall on SN’s Vinnie Iyer’s Big Board and is the highest-ranked quarterback, just ahead of Ward.

Four teams currently in the top six could be in the market for a quarterback: the Giants, Titans, Browns and Raiders. However, New York is in pole position to land the No. 1 seed and with two more losses would have a choice between Sanders and Ward.

Should the Giants pull off an upset, their strong schedule would allow all three of these quarterback-needy teams to move ahead of them in the draft order. In that case, it would be worth watching to see if Sanders still tries to force his way to the Giants.
