Sheriff’s officials investigate fatal shooting at Greenfield Amazon facility – The Daily Reporter

HANCOCK COUNTY – Officials with the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department say a 39-year-old Indianapolis man is dead after a shooting at the Amazon Distribution Warehouse at 7114 West 200N, Greenfield.

Officials say the shooting occurred in self-defense during an incident between two employees at the facility.

According to a news release, Hancock County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to the parking lot of the Amazon Distribution Warehouse around 1:45 a.m. on Dec. 13 for a report of a person shot. The camp is located near Cumberland and the Marion County/Hancock County line.

When officers arrived, they found a man lying on the ground with an apparent gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The suspected shooter, another Indianapolis man, was also in the parking lot with his hands raised to confront officers. Officers located the suspected shooter without incident and called for more resources.

Detectives and evidence technicians from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department were on scene. The Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office was notified and began working with Sheriff’s Department officials later that morning.

After an initial review of the available evidence, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office can assure the public that there is no danger and no ongoing threat to them.

“This appears to be an isolated incident between two individuals and the shooting appears to have occurred in self-defense,” Capt. Robert Harris said in a news release. “The suspected shooter and witnesses have all cooperated with law enforcement. His identity is not being released at this time.”

The deceased man was identified as Isaac Riley, 39, of Indianapolis. His family has been notified. The shooter’s name is not being released at this time, Harris said, but noted that the man was from Indianapolis.

“We know they were both employees heading to work and there was some sort of interaction between them. “We anticipate a disagreement, but we are waiting for investigators to sort it all out,” Harris said.

Harris noted that they are not recommending that charges be filed against the shooter. However, if this changes following further investigation, they will inform the public.

“We’re still talking to officials at the district attorney’s office, but we believe it was self-defense,” Harris said.

Harris noted that the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office, the Hancock County 911 Center and the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office have all been working together and will continue to do so as the investigation continues.

“We would like to thank all of the nearby agencies that helped handle other calls for service this morning,” Harris said.

Amazon spokesman Austin Stowe told the Daily Reporter in a press release: “We are deeply saddened by this incident and our thoughts are with their loved ones during this difficult time.” We are working closely with law enforcement as they investigate this incident .”

Stowe continued, “Out of an abundance of caution, we have temporarily suspended operations while the investigation continues and will also be increasing our on-site security staff upon reopening for safety reasons.”
