Where does Friday the 13th come from?

Friday the 13th’s reputation as a bringer of bad luck has its origins largely in religious and cultural beliefs. In Christianity, it is associated with the Last Supper, where Judas, the 13th guest, betrayed Jesus, leading to his crucifixion on a Friday, according to USA TODAY.

Norse mythology also contributes to this with the 13th god Loki, who brings chaos and death.

This superstition deepened over time, particularly after the mass arrest of the Knights Templar on Friday, October 13, 1307, further cementing that day’s unfortunate status.

When is next Friday the 13th?

Next year the only Friday the 13th will fall in June.

The following year, 2026, there will be three Fridays the 13th – spanning February, March and November – the maximum possible in a single calendar year.
