Sierra traveling this weekend? What you should know about I-80 for New Year's Eve

Travelers in the Sierra Nevada may face windy conditions as well as snow or rain on Interstate 80 in Nevada and California this weekend.

Tahoe could experience wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour through Friday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service in Reno. Rain is expected in Tahoe, with up to 1 inch of snow possible at elevations above 7,000 feet.

A sea wind warning expires today at 5 p.m.

Rain is forecast for Tahoe this weekend, with snow expected to exceed 7,500 feet on Saturday and 7,000 feet on Sunday. No accumulation is expected.

Snowfall is possible on some mountain passes over the weekend as a second storm approaches on Sunday.

What will weekend conditions be like on I-80?

Those traveling over Donner Summit should expect winds of up to 30 miles per hour and widespread fog Friday afternoon. Snow is possible later Friday, but little to no accumulation is expected.

The pass could see up to 1/2 inch of snow on Saturday, with another 4 inches possible on Sunday. Travelers should also prepare for rain and wind this weekend, with gusts of up to 70 km/h possible on Sunday.

Forecast for Lake Tahoe

Friday: Scattered showers are expected, with up to an inch of snow above 8,000 feet and wind gusts up to 60 mph. Highs will be 48 at the lake and 38 at higher elevations. Winds will ease to 40 mph this afternoon, with overnight lows between 28 and 38 mph.

Saturday: Chance of showers, with a high of 51 at the lake and 41 at higher elevations. Snow over 8,000 feet. Showers are possible overnight; Snow depth 7,500 feet, with lows between 28 and 38.

Sunday: Showers are expected, with a high of 48 at lake level and 38 at higher elevations, with wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour. Snow over 7,000 feet. Showers are possible in the evening and night temperatures are between 14 and 24 degrees.
