American gymnast Simone Biles has added another title to her resume.

The 11-time Olympic medalist was named Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Athlete of the Year on Thursday.

“Honestly, it’s a great honor. I know some of the greats who have won it over the years, so it’s really exciting to keep gymnastics on the map,” Biles, 27, told Good Morning America from The Sports Illustrated Awards. “I know a lot of people love the sport of gymnastics during an Olympic year and have followed my career closely, but I was still very shocked.”

She continued, “I feel like I’m always shocked when I win any award or get honored.”

The Female Athlete of the Year award follows a year in which Biles took the 2024 Paris Olympics by storm, adding four new medals in team, all-around, vault and floor exercise to her collection.

After her performance in Paris, the 27-year-old Biles is now the second-most decorated gymnast in Olympic history, according to the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee.

Biles won three gold medals and a silver medal in Paris, just a few years after she withdrew from the team final at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics because she suffered from “the twisties,” a disorienting condition that causes a gymnast’s mind and body to twist dangerously out of balance.

“Simone Biles is Sports Illustrated’s 2024 Female Athlete of the Year because she won gold, and then another gold, and then another; because it changed the face of their sport and the conversation among athletes in general; because she continues to speak out on issues that…” “This is important to her,” the magazine wrote of Biles. “And perhaps most of all, because after (teammate Jordan) Chiles wondered out loud about reliving the darkest time of her career, she took a deep breath, saluted the judges and started running.”

Biles will accept the 2024 Athlete of the Year award in person on Jan. 7 when Sports Illustrated holds its annual awards ceremony in Las Vegas.

This year’s ceremony will take place at Wynn Las Vegas and will be hosted by actor Keegan-Michael Key.

Sports Illustrated has presented the “Sportsman of the Year” award annually since 1954.

In 2023, the award was given to University of Colorado head coach and former NFL star Deion Sanders.
