Simone Biles talks NFL game day prep, Chicago and the holidays

Olympics.com: Okay… Simone Biles. Nice to see you. How are you?

Simone Biles: Good. How are you doing?

Olympics.com: I’m fine. Where are you going today?

SB: Today we are on the way to the Chicago Bears football game.

Olympics.com: Ready for some game day questions?

SB: Yes. Ready for some game day questions!

Olympics.com: Let’s do it. The first thing I did today was find out about the fit.

SB: Yes. OK. Today’s fit is actually very easy, just because me and my friends’ outfits didn’t arrive on time. So that’s my support. Actually, I should have worn it to another game. We have 36 (Owens’ number), a bucket hat and some boots, but it’s freezing cold so at least it works on game day.

Olympics.com: You enjoyed some great fashion looks during the Games. How do you put it together?

SB: Honestly, I reach out to some of the designers who make the clothes and I have no idea. I let them play a kind of free game and say, “Surprise me.” And then I put them together.

Olympics.com: Do you have a favorite so far?

SB: Yes. My favorite style so far is one I haven’t worn yet, and I’m wearing it to the game on Thursday.

Olympics.com: Who is more nervous before game day and competition day? You or Jonathan?

SB: I just have to say Jonathan because even though I’m worried about his health and safety, it’s his game. He knows better.

Olympics.com: We saw in your documentary how you and he interacted before a meeting. How is the interaction between you on game day?

SB: Well, normally you’re not allowed to be with him the night before, so we sleep separately in the hotel. And afterward he usually comes to me and gives me a kiss goodbye. So it’s very… He’s so relaxed. He is relaxed. And that is also his personality. Not as stressed as me.

Olympics.com: You talked about how much he supported you and how much it meant to you. What does it feel like to be able to pay that back somehow now?

SB: Oh my God. It means the world to me. And I know it means a lot to him that I can support his games. It means a lot to him to be on the sidelines beforehand because he says that’s his routine before the game. That’s why he’s always looking for me on the sidelines to convey happiness and wishes. That’s just his superstition.

Olympics.com: Who came up with the handshake you did before the game?

SB: This is Jonathan. Jonathan thinks about all these things: handshakes, pregame rituals, what he has to eat – all Jonathan.

Olympics.com: How much do you know about soccer?

SB: Well, I could probably explain it to a five year old. But if I explain it to a 25-year-old, it might not make sense.

Olympics.com: Who knows more about the other’s sport, you or Jonathan?

SB: Jonathan. He knows so much about gymnastics.
