Singapore Airlines gets luxury upgrade: Everything we know

The world’s longest flight, operated by Singapore Airlines, will introduce ultra-comfortable first-class seats for the nearly 19-hour journey.

The airline recently announced plans to add new luxury seats to its Airbus A350-900 ULR, the aircraft used for its longest routes – such as the trip from New York City to Singapore, which covers an impressive 9,585 miles.

This is the first time that first class seats will be available for the trip. The introduction of seats for passengers is planned for 2027.

Currently, the world’s longest flight has 67 business class seats and 94 premium economy seats. Travel magazine In the distance reported that there will be four first-class suites on Singapore’s Airbus A350-900 ULR.

Singapore Airlines CEO Goh Choon Phong said in a press release: “The new first class and business class seat designs will incorporate thoughtful elements that push the boundaries of comfort, luxury and modernity.”

“Over the last six years, we have fully engaged customers and stakeholders in the design of our next-generation long-haul cabin products, anticipating their evolving preferences and expectations down to the smallest detail.”

The airline will also upgrade its other long-haul aircraft with new business class seats. In addition, the company will equip its future Boeing 777-9s, which are expected to take to the skies in 2026, with first-class cabins.

Singapore Airlines’ route from New York City (JFK) to Singapore is the longest flight time in the world at 18 hours and 50 minutes. The airline also operates the second longest flight in the world – Singapore to Newark, which takes 18 hours and 45 minutes.

Singapore Airlines has one of the highest market values of any airline in the world. As of May 2024, the Singaporean flagship airline had a market value of $14.99 billion.

It trails only Delta, Ryanair Holdings, United Airlines Holdings and Southwest. Singapore Airlines serves 130 destinations in Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and North America.

Other airlines have introduced more luxury seats to capitalize on high-spending passenger desires. British Airways recently unveiled its new first-class seat, which it claims offers “a modern luxury hotel feel.”

These new British Airways seats are expected to launch as early as 2026 and are part of an $8.9 billion overhaul of the airline’s passenger experience.
