Temperatures remain low and sales in grocery stores are high.

“Everyone is getting ready and heading out,” said Lauren Klipfel, store operator at Roy Pope Grocery.

Roy Pope first opened its doors in the Camp Bowie area in the 1940s. Today, they offer local gourmet items to shoppers.

“So the number one bestseller is probably our homemade potties. We have a brisket and a whole chicken pot pie,” Klipfel said. “We also sell a lot of cinnamon rolls, lasagna and King Ranch casserole. But our deli has hot sandwiches and homemade smoked filet chili all day long.”

Images of empty shelves at major grocery retailers have been circulating on social media as North Texans wait out the first winter storm of the season.

Bill Mulder said he’s avoiding the bigger stores these days.

“Well, there’s no parking,” Mulder said.

With just as much activity going on, suppliers headed to Roy Pope’s Wednesday morning to stock the shelves with fresh Stones Throw Farm produce, wine and a variety of staples.

“We kind of placed orders early and got a lot of bread, eggs, water and all the essentials that everyone needs,” Klipfel said. “We have a lot of people calling to make sure we have items in stock. Everyone comes in, buys a few bags and walks out as sales go up.”

Mulder said he would get his shopping done before any snowfall could occur Thursday afternoon.

“Grapes, meat, sandwiches,” Mulder said. “Roy Pope always has what I want and a lot that I don’t come for but end up buying.”

While customers were optimistic about road conditions, they also wanted to enjoy their favorite foods from the comfort of their own home.

“I don’t think the storm is going to be that bad, so I’m not completely freaked out,” Stuart Isgur said.

“We saw ice cream, wine sales and all the things that people want as they prepare to sit at home for a few days,” Klipfel said.

Yes. You read that correctly. Shoppers are turning to frozen desserts to weather the storm.

“You’re supposed to eat ice cream on the first snow day of the year,” said Charlie Jentry. Jentry owns TruJoy Yogurt, a brand of frozen Greek yogurt made in Dallas-Fort Worth.

Jentry said eating ice cream during the first snow of the season is a tradition that brings good luck.

“There’s only one way to find out. So give it a try and you’ll probably get lucky,” Jentry said. “But don’t hold me to it.”

And although they expect snow and some delays on the roads, Klipfel said her team is prepared to continue serving their customers during regular business hours.

“We talked about who lives close enough to get there safely tomorrow,” Klipfel said. “The great thing about Roy Pope is that not only are we a grocery store, but we also have a deli, coffee and wine bar, so we have seating inside. We serve hot drinks, wine and everything all day long. It becomes a nice place to chat with your neighbors and just spend the day together.”
