Small plane crashes on highway in Westchester County; 1 dead, 1 injured, New York State Police say

HARRISON, Westchester County (WABC) — One person was killed and another injured when a small plane crashed on a highway in Westchester County.

What should have been a normal flight turned fatal as a 32-year-old Monsey man died and another person on board is now in a stable condition.

The plane’s pilot was trying to get to safety when it fell out of the sky and landed on the median of I-684 just before Westchester County Airport.

Wreckage from the single-engine plane was found near Exit 2 as first responders and investigators swarmed the plane and tried to get those inside to safety.

The flight took a bad turn when he suddenly crashed.

The pilot had attempted to land at the nearby airport after declaring an emergency.

Pilot: Tower, 2-9-8-Papa-Mike is arriving directly for 1-6 in case of emergency.

Tower: 2nd-9th-8th November-Papa-Mike, Westchester Tower. Wind speed 012, gust 22, lights on, runway 1-6, cleared to land.

Pilot: Landing clearance for 1-6 2-9-8-Papa-Mike.

The plane, which failed to reach its destination, had taken off from Linden, New Jersey, shortly after 6 p.m. and was heading north up the Hudson when it suddenly lost altitude at a rate of about 1,000 feet per minute Turned sharply right toward White Plains.

The National Transportation Safety Board reported the crash just one hour and fifteen minutes after takeoff.

The NTSB and FAA will investigate what exactly went wrong.

The identities of the pilot and passenger have not yet been released.

I-684 was reopened and cleared after the crash.

Gov. Kathy Hochul released a statement about the plane crash Thursday evening.

“I was notified of a small aircraft crash near Exit 2 on I-684 in the town of Harrison, Westchester County. State Police immediately responded with local emergency responders and determined there were two people on board, one person was confirmed dead and the other is in serious condition as the investigation is ongoing. The crash also caused an aircraft gas leak that DEC plans to quickly contain and eliminate on board while praying for a safe recovery of the injured person.”
