Snoop Huntley is in line to be the starting QB vs. Browns after the Dolphins demoted Tua Tagovailoa

BEREA – The Browns have a chance to feel like training camp on Sunday when they host the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins announced Saturday afternoon that quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has been downgraded from questionable to doubtful due to a hip injury. If Tagovailoa can’t play, which the name change certainly suggests, that would mean Tyler “Snoop” Huntley would be the starter for Miami.

Huntley spent several months with the Browns during the offseason and training camp after his original NFL team, the Baltimore Ravens, originally allowed him to walk as a free agent. It always seemed like he and second-year pro Dorian Thompson-Robinson were in a battle for the No. 3 quarterback spot behind Deshaun Watson and Jameis Winston.

In three preseason games, Huntley completed 37 of 51 passes (72.5%) for 322 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions and a passer rating of 92.1. He was fired five times.

The Browns released Huntley on August 29th. Shortly after his release, the Ravens quickly signed him to their practice squad.

Tagovailao initially dealt with the hip injury before the Dolphins’ win against the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday. He played through the injury but admitted to reporters that it was painful.

“Tua told me last week that playing through the hip would be a challenge,” CBS Sports’ Tracy Wolfson wrote Saturday on X. “I got through it, but it’s obviously gotten worse. I was told it was the same hip he had surgery on in college, but luckily in a different location.”

It’s the same hip that Tagovailoa famously injured in his final college season at the University of Alabama.

The Dolphins also signed quarterback Skylar Thompson from the practice squad. Thompson has started one game in three appearances this season.

Tagovailoa has already missed four games due to a severe concussion in September. The Dolphins signed Huntley from the Ravens’ practice squad on September 16 following the concussion.

Miami is 6-5 with Tagovailoa as the starter. He completed a league-best 72.9% of his passes.

Huntley started three games for the Dolphins this season while Tagovailoa dealt with another serious concussion. In those starts, he was 1-2, completing 59.1% of his passes for 377 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

In four seasons with the Ravens, Huntley appeared in 20 regular season games with nine starts as Lamar Jackson’s backup, going 3-6 and completing 64.6% of his passes for 1,957 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also started a wild-card game in Cincinnati in January 2022, which the Ravens famously lost when he fumbled at the goal line and the Bengals’ Sam Hubbard returned the game 99 yards for a touchdown.
