Snow and ice lead to slippery roads and close mountain schools

Snow and bitter cold created dangerous driving conditions Tuesday morning, prompting school closures and delays in the mountains.

SCHOOL CLOSURES AND DELAYS

News 13 crews reported snow on Hendersonville Road south of I-40 around 4 a.m. Ice and snow were also observed in Woodfin and on I-26 north of downtown Asheville. The North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) warned of several crashes in the Asheville area during the morning commute, some of which resulted in lane closures lasting hours.

As of 7 a.m., many mountain school districts, including Buncombe County and Asheville City, had moved to remote learning due to the inclement weather.

Cold and windy conditions will continue throughout the day, with wind chill values ​​in the teens and 20s through Tuesday afternoon. Sunshine and milder temperatures return on Wednesday, with highs closer to 50°.

EFFECTS OF WEATHER ON THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE

Due to icy roads, the City of Asheville suspended Asheville Rapid Transit (ART) bus service Tuesday morning. City officials said crews would continue to assess road conditions and attempt to resume service later in the day.

City officials said the Asheville Parks & Recreation Community Centers will operate Tuesday, Dec. 3, during inclement weather. Child care with indoor activities, arts and crafts, and bonding games is offered for $5 per child at the Linwood Crump Shiloh Community Centers (for Buncombe County School students) and Tempie Avery Montford Community Center (for Asheville City School students) from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m . Children should bring their own lunch and drink, but snacks will be provided.

All other community centers are open from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m., but regular events are canceled. All sports leagues and track and field practices are also canceled.
