Snow and ice totals near Charlotte, NC, city by city

Communities in the mountains saw the most snow, while further south in the metropolitan area saw less snow.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Friday was a day to keep an eye on the weather as much of the Charlotte metro was covered in snow and ice. On Thursday afternoon, the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the metropolitan area that was in effect from 7 a.m. Friday to 7 a.m. Saturday. The WCNC Charlotte Weather Impact Team continually monitored current conditions to find out what our neighbors in the area were experiencing.

A frequently asked question is what to expect from certain cities in the Charlotte area. Chief Meteorologist Brad Panovich shared a breakdown on social media with a city-by-city forecast for snow, sleet and ice. Most of the areas that saw higher predicted amounts were primarily in the mountains and north of Charlotte. It was likely less visible in areas further south toward South Carolina.

Late Friday evening, meteorologist Brittany Van Voorhees was gathering snow and sleet counts across the Charlotte area. Mountain communities saw the most snow as predicted, with Boone reporting 4 inches had accumulated there. Lancaster, South Carolina, reported seeing only a tenth of an inch.

Municipal airports in the Charlotte area also reported freezing rain. Monroe saw just under a tenth of an inch, while Gastonia, Rock Hill and Longview (in Burke County) each reported five hundredths of an inch.

These totals were collected just before 11 p.m. on Friday.
