Snow causes messy roads in MN

It’s the biggest snowfall of the season so far in the Twin Cities, and the snow is making for difficult driving conditions across the metro on Thursday.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Thursday. When everything is done, widespread snow accumulations of 3 to 6 inches could occur along or near the Interstate 94 corridor.

What we know: Snow fell during the morning commute, making travel a bit difficult. Remember to drive carefully and allow yourself extra driving time while teams clear the roads.

Things were slow on Minnesota roads, with average speeds hovering around 20 to 30 miles per hour for most of the morning. The slippery road conditions surprised some drivers, while some roads were covered in snow, making it difficult to see lanes.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, between midnight and 8:30 a.m., there were 91 property damage crashes, nine personal injury crashes, 28 vehicles leaving the road, four spin-offs and five jackknifed tractor-trailers on Minnesota roads.

A school bus left the road on Highway 100 in Brooklyn Center on Thursday.

MSP Airport: Delays due to snow and ice

What we know: A ground hold was lifted after being issued at MSP Airport until 10:15 a.m. The FAA now states that there is only an average departure delay of 30 minutes.

This happened after a ground delay was imposed due to snow and ice, the FAA’s website says. The ground delay was in effect until 9:59 a.m. A ground closure had previously been issued for the airport, but it expired at 7:30 a.m

During Thursday morning’s ground delay, the FAA’s website reported an average airport departure delay of 62 minutes.

As of 10:19 a.m., one departure had been canceled and 39 departures had been delayed, according to MSP Airport’s website. Meanwhile, four arrivals were canceled and 36 were delayed.

Rochester International Airport in southern Minnesota was closed Thursday morning but reopened at 7:30 a.m

What to expect with the snow on Thursday?

Timeline: Here’s what to expect with Thursday’s snow in the Twin Cities:

  • Thursday morning: Light to moderate snowfall makes for difficult road conditions during the morning commute; 2-4+ inches of snow is possible.
  • Thursday afternoon: Lighter snow as flakes increase, with some gusty breezes; another 1-2 inches of snow is possible.
  • Thursday evening: Isolated thunderstorms will weaken as snow moves out of the region. There may be some blowing and blowing snow; Whirling up of snow is possible.

Snow accumulations in the Interstate 94 corridor area are forecast to be in the range of 3 to 6 inches. Further south and north of the corridor, snow amounts will be in the 1 to 3 inch range.

The highs on Thursday will be around 26 degrees in the Twin Cities, but then it will get colder. Friday’s high will be in the teens but will feel closer to single digits.
