Snow in the shape of a lake is moving through parts of southeast Wisconsin

Lake effect snow showers occurred overnight, accumulating near the lakeshore from Milwaukee County south toward Racine and Kenosha. While the initial snowfall was lighter and did not spend much time on land, lake effect snow continues this morning. Light northeasterly winds are expected to strengthen around and after daybreak, bringing more lake snow to far southeastern Wisconsin.

The National Weather Service has expanded its winter weather advisory to include Milwaukee County. Most of the county will miss the snowfall. Cudahy/St. Both Francis and Oak Creek may experience more moderate snowfall as the lake effect snow band moves a little further west.

Closer to the lakeshore in Milwaukee and south, 1 to 3 inches of snowfall is still expected. Locally, higher amounts of 3 to 6 inches and more are possible if the lake-induced snow band maintains moderate intensity and/or spends a few hours onshore. This would most likely be east of I-41/94 in Racine/Kenosha counties. Light winds are expected to produce lake snow for an extended period today. For this reason, the winter weather warning has been extended until 4 p.m. At this point the winds are turning stronger from the north and even from the northwest, throwing the band of snow back out over the lake.

Meanwhile, partly cloudy and windy conditions are expected for most of southeastern Wisconsin outside the lake effect snow zone. Northeast winds may gust up to 20-30 mph. Falling snow can blow around and reduce visibility.

Overnight lows will fall into the teens under partly cloudy skies.

The cold weather will persist for most of the coming week as high pressure moves in from the west. The highs continue to be in the 20s and the lows are in the teens.
