Snow leads to dangerous travel in the mountains

A blizzard swept across Colorado on Tuesday, covering mountain roads with snow and ice, making travel dangerous due to slippery conditions, according to the National Weather Service.

NWS forecasters said road conditions, particularly in mountain passes, are “rapidly deteriorating” and will continue to worsen as heavier snow falls throughout the day.

Updated at 7:30 p.m.: According to the National Weather Service, heavier snow is expected Tuesday evening, making some mountain roads extremely difficult or impossible to drive.

People should avoid driving if possible and have a snow emergency kit with an ice scraper, snow broom, coat, gloves, hat, boots, portable shovel, battery, jumper cables, phone chargers, water, non-perishable food, blankets and tow strap, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation .

The following streets will be closed from 7:30 p.m.:

  • US 6 over Loveland Pass between I-70 and mile marker 228.7
  • US 285 north between County Road 7 and Boreas Pass Road
  • Colorado 65 between Crag Crest Trail and Island Lake Road, 16 miles north of Cedaredge.
