Snow, sleet and freezing rain are coming to metro Detroit – when, where and how much can we expect?

DETROIT – The Detroit metro area will experience snow, sleet and freezing rain on Monday, and accumulations of all three are possible.

Here’s a look at what you should expect in specific locations and when it will happen.

M-59 and north

Areas along M-59 and to the north should see mostly snow Monday evening.

There could be some sleet or a wintry mix near M-59 during the afternoon or early evening.

Overall, the area could see 2 to 4 inches of snow. Areas near Saginaw and the Thumb could potentially see 3 to 5 inches.

M-59 to I-696/I-94 corridor

These areas should initially see snow in the afternoon through early evening, but then transition to a wintry mix of snow, sleet and possibly freezing rain.

From M-59 to I-696, 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected, changing to sleet and freezing rain. There could be enough of this wintry mix to leave some accumulation of sleet and ice in certain areas.

South of the I-94 corridor

Locations south of I-94 will begin with snow Monday afternoon/early evening and then quickly transition to a wintry mix.

Eastern Wayne County and portions of Monroe County could see rain for some time before a return to a wintry mix and snow as the system exits the region.

A maximum of an inch of snow is expected south of I-94, with a light accumulation of sleet and freezing rain also possible.

When does winter weather end?

The wintry mix and snowfall will taper off around or after midnight Monday into Tuesday as the forecast changes to cloudy overnight.

Lows will remain around freezing early Tuesday morning.
