Snow Warning Issued for Central NY as Another Round of Lake Effects Occurs

Update; The Weather Service has now expanded The winter weather advisory also includes Wayne and Oswego counties. The advice is now in force until Wednesday 1 p.m.

Syracuse, NY – The National Weather Service issued a weather advisory for Central New York today as cold winds continue to produce lake effect snow off Lake Ontario.

The winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 a.m. Wednesday for Cayuga, Cortland, Madison and Onondaga counties.

“Additional snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches are possible within the most persistent snow bands,” the statement said. “Wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour could cause blowing and blowing snow.”

Roads could become slippery and visibility could be severely limited, the weather service warned.

Snow today and over the next few days is expected to be persistent but not overwhelming. Precipitation is expected to fall steadily, averaging one to two inches every few hours, but could be greater where lake effect snow bands persist. The duration and intensity of these narrow bands of lake-effect snow are difficult to determine in advance.

The hills south of Syracuse are expected to see the most snow.

This round-of-lake effect will not be nearly as intense as the one that hit late last week. This storm dropped more than 5 feet (1.5 meters) of snow in portions of Oneida County as winds blew west-southwest across the lake.

Syracuse received 16.1 inches of snow, including 9 inches on Saturday. This is measured at Hancock International Airport, the official climate location for Syracuse.

The wind has shifted slightly to the northwest, meaning the snow machine will spray across Onondaga and surrounding counties. This also means that the wind blows over a shorter section of the lake and therefore picks up less moisture that falls off as snow.
