Snowfall totals for lake-effect storm in Buffalo, Western NY

Southern Erie County residents Friday morning dug out of — or at least eyed with suspicion — significant accumulations created by a lake-effect snowstorm that lashed a narrow swath of the area for 36 hours, with only a brief reprieve early Thursday afternoon .

According to the National Weather Service in Buffalo, the northwestern part of Eden reported the highest amount late Thursday evening at 42.5 inches. Orchard Park, where most of the snow had fallen by early Thursday afternoon, reported 38 inches Friday morning.

Areas farther east in southern Erie County were not far behind. East Aurora reportedly had 37 inches, Elma had 34.7 inches and Wales had 34 inches. West Seneca, Lake View, Alden, Angola and Holland all received accumulation of 1½ feet or more.

Lackawanna, which is expected to be on the northern edge of the lake-effect snow band and is uncertain of receiving large amounts, recorded 32 inches as of midnight – the bulk of which came as the band swung northward Thursday evening.

About 17 inches were reported early Friday morning in South Buffalo, but depths dropped significantly: Buffalo Niagara International Airport received 2.4 inches, Cheektowaga and Williamsville each received 2 inches, Kenmore reported 1.2 inches and Tonawanda recorded one inch.

Meanwhile, Dunkirk in Chautauqua County took the most hit during this storm, with 17.5 inches; in Genesee County, Alexander got 25 inches; and Wyoming County, Warsaw, was hit with 28.5 inches.

The following list contains the highest measurement within municipal boundaries in Erie County. The readings take place between 11pm Thursday and 10am Friday and were submitted by spotters, the public and a group of volunteer observers.

• Orchard Park: 38 inches

• East Aurora: 37 inches

• Lackawanna: 32 inches

• Lake View: 22.8 inches

• West Seneca: 22.1 inches
