Snowstorm brings school closures into Tuesday, freezing temperatures for rest of week – NBC4 Washington

As the Washington, D.C. area’s first major snowstorm moves through the region, many school districts will remain closed Tuesday.

Roads are expected to remain dangerous through Tuesday as slush begins to freeze. If you don’t have to drive, you should stay off the road.

The rest of the week is expected to be cold, Storm Team4 says, with winds of 30 to 40 mph Tuesday and wind chills below freezing.

Storm Team4 is also tracking another potential storm on Saturday.

The blizzard dumped 6 to 12 inches of snow across the region, causing school and government closures, dangerous driving conditions and transportation issues.

Which school districts will be closed?

Many school districts will remain closed Tuesday, including DC Public Schools.

Virginia, Alexandria City, Arlington County, Fairfax County, Falls Church, Fauquier County, Loudoun County, Prince William County and Stafford County will close all public schools.

Maryland, Calvert County, Charles County, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and St. Mary’s County will also close all public schools. Frederick County Public Schools still listed a two-hour delay on its website.

Navigating the streets

Those who do not need to drive are still urged to stay off the roads, which also allows local traffic authorities to work on the roads.

“Don’t overdo the conditions, slow down, take your time and make sure you give the plow drivers and everything else enough room to work,” Danny King of the Montgomery County Department of Transportation told Walter Morris of News4.

If you’re walking, it’s still safest to use the sidewalk, even if it’s covered in snow.

Create travel plans

While subway trains will operate as usual, subway buses will be heavily used Tuesday, meaning the number of bus routes will be reduced from 193 to 42, according to WMATA.

Hundreds of flights to and from Reagan National Airport, Dulles and BWI were canceled Monday.

Reagan National Airport closed runways Monday evening to prevent another freeze, but is expected to reopen Tuesday morning.

Freezing temperatures

As temperatures drop, the risk of burst water pipes increases.

There are some things you can do to prevent the pipes in your home from freezing:

  • Close valves on outside faucets
  • Drain and disconnect external hoses
  • If pipes burst, call a plumber
