Closures and states of emergency are announced in the Central Plains, Midwest and East Coast regions of the U.S. as a snowstorm is expected across several states in these areas in the coming days.

The National Weather Service has issued winter storm warnings for parts of Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, DC

6 to 12 inches of snow is expected from Ohio to DC by Monday morning. More than 240,000 customers in West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois and Missouri were without power early Monday morning, according to Poweroutage.us.

The governors of several states affected by the snowstorm declared states of emergency early last week and lasted until last weekend.

“A state of readiness enhances the state’s ability to respond quickly and effectively to potential hazards and threats before they escalate and provides an easy path for information sharing and coordination,” Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said in a statement .

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said: “This winter storm is likely to cause significant disruption and dangerous conditions on our roadways and could lead to significant power outages – just 24 hours before it gets dangerously cold.”

Several school systems in the affected states, as well as in cities such as Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Louisville, will close Monday.

In Washington, DC, the Smithsonian museums and the National Zoo will remain closed Monday. Non-emergency federal employees will work remotely in Washington on Monday as offices remain closed.

The winter storms also affected air traffic in the USA. According to the tracking platform FlightAware, more than 400 flights to or from the United States were delayed early Monday morning. More than 1,300 additional flights had to be canceled.
