Snubs and surprises at the 2025 Golden Globes: Meryl Streep, Fallout, Kneecap

In an awards season that’s looking pretty crazy in many ways, the Golden Globes raised the curtain on some magical contenders this morning.

After the nominations of Mindy Kaling and a slightly name-challenged Morris Chestnut were announced early Monday, the ceremony formerly run by the HFPA panned to the likes of HacksCate Blanchett, Slow horses“Gary Oldman, Emilia PerezJodie Foster, Just murders in the building, Shrinkage’s stars, The bear & more. But even with so many categories, it sometimes seems impossible that anyone will be left out, because for some it won’t be “the party of the year,” to quote Globes boss Helen Hoehne this morning.

Check out our list of people who weren’t invited to the Nikki Glaser shindig (which, by the way, received a comedy special nomination) on CBS and Paramount+ on January 5th. Also, no streamer pun intended, there are a few surprises too – see you, Mr. Ford.

So read up, email us, and let us know who we may have missed. The circus is back in town.

SNUBS

flash A Steve McQueen-directed film about the Nazi bombing of London during World War II and the toll it took on individuals, families and a nation… oh yeah, and its stars Saoirse Ronan (who actually got double snubbed today) and nothing ? Hell, flash The Modfather himself Paul Weller was also there. What a bombshell to just ignore all of this.

Meryl Streep – So much love for Just murders in the building this Monday morning, but you forgot Meryl Streep. This is a true crime.

Denis Villeneuve – Good morning Globes voters, I have a question that you might be able to help me with: Has your nominee been nominated for Best Picture – Drama Dune: Part Two direct yourself?

Jon M. Chu – Please see above, but this time for the Evil Director. They gave the film itself and its fabulous stars Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande well-deserved nominations, but left out the true wizard of all things Evil?

Universal

Stand out The second season of Amazon Prime Video’s post-apocalyptic megahit is currently being filmed Stand out was wiped out today. Nothing for Emmy-nominated Walton Goggins, nothing for Emmy-nominated Best Drama Overall. Duds.

The apprentice Globes voters, conservative by nature, decided to leave the controversial Donald Trump biopic off the ballot this time. Yes, there were nods to Jeremy Strong’s very strong Roy Cohn and Sebastian Stan’s role as the former and future POTUS, but the Ali Abbasi-directed film itself was missing. Are they getting full? Morning Joe hoping to ingratiate himself with the new regime?

industry – HBO always does well at the star-hungry Golden Globes, but the much-lauded drama’s money traders and investment bankers couldn’t get a shilling today.

Marianne Jean Baptiste – Some very hard truths this morning for the much touted Hard truths Actor. Jean-Baptiste has won critics’ awards in LA, DC, NY and just about everywhere else, as well as Best Actress at the British Independent Film Awards for her stunning performance in the deeply personal, Mike Leigh-directed film. Nice time to try to be a maverick, Golden Globes, really classy.

Marianne Jean-Baptiste speaks on the “Hard Truths” panel discussion at Deadline Contenders Film: Los Angeles held at the Directors Guild of America on November 16, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

kneecap After debuting at Sundance earlier this year, acclaim, a hot tour and yesterday a win at the British Independent Film Awards, Rich Peppiatt helmed the comedy about real-life West Belfast hip-hop trio and their attempt to save their native language was primed to give the Globes a truly wild ride back. Unfortunately Liam Óg Ó hAnnaidh, Naoise Ó Caireallain and JJ Ó Dochartaigh will not be in the Beverly Hilton ballroom next month. We will miss the trio and the film, believe me.

Saturday evening – The highly anticipated comedy directed by Jason Reitman in 1975’s literal release SNL Turns out it wasn’t ready for Globes prime time this year.

Ridley Scott – Undoubtedly, Scott doesn’t care whether the Globes recognize him or not. Let’s start with this. However, the group made damn sure to share in some bread and circus through donations Gladiator II He received a supporting actor nomination for the great Denzel Washington, landing him in the second year of this strange film and box office success list. Here’s the thing: Overlooking one of the most accomplished and, let’s face it, most popular directors of our time is an insult to the 87-year-old Scott and the films themselves.

SURPRISES

Billy Bob Thornton – When it comes to Taylor Sheridan shows, the Globes tend to be pretty slim despite their popularity. Looks like the former Oscar winner has put some oil on the scales Countryman Role.

Harrison Ford – Nothing for last year 1923 for the big screen icon on the small screen, but Ford now got a name for it shrinkage role…and he didn’t have to go full Red Hulk at the Globes to get her attention.

Kate Winslet – HBOs never really capture the political or critical zeitgeist The regime came and went last year. Things have clearly changed for the widely acclaimed lead role today. We all expected some love for her lee film, but not its strangely devilish and adorable dictator. Apparently Globes voters and organizers were desperate to make sure Winslet showed up.
