Texas football had to deal with a first-and-goal from Ohio State’s 1-yard line with 3:54 left in the fourth quarter, trailing 21-14 and with a chance to tie the game in the semifinals of the Cotton Bowl balance.

The Longhorns found themselves in a must-score situation with the clock running out and their season on the line in the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Three plays later, Texas faced a fourth-and-goal from the 8-yard line. The Longhorns’ scoring opportunity turned into a disastrous 14-point swing for Ohio State when Jack Sawyer picked off Quinn Ewers and returned the fumble 83 yards for a touchdown. It was probably the most decisive play in the Buckeyes’ 28:14 victory.

The second most important play might have happened two losses before. How did the Longhorns end up gaining seven yards after going 1-1?

Texas and coach Steve Sarkisian chose a throw to the left sideline that was blocked by Ohio State safety Caleb Downs. Although he didn’t make the tackle, he pushed Quintrevion Wisner back far enough that Ohio State was able to tackle him for the big loss.

“It’s one of those plays. If you block it right, you can get into the end zone,” Sarkisian said after the game. “We didn’t do that and we lost a lot of mileage.”
