Sofia Carson Says Jason Bateman Isn’t a ‘Typical’ Villain in ‘Carry-On’ (Exclusive)

Sofia Carson marvels at Jason Bateman’s work in her Netflix action thriller Hand luggage.

In a new digital cover interview with PEOPLE, the 31-year-old actress says, “It’s extraordinary to see the 55-year-old Bateman, who may be better known for comedic roles, ‘as the villain.’

Plus, “Jason’s character isn’t your typical super-slim villain,” she adds.

In Hand luggageBateman plays the Traveler, a mysterious man at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) who calls TSA agent Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) on Christmas Eve and asks him to let a passenger named Mateo (Tonatiuh) go through security without him to mark the contents of his hand luggage – otherwise the traveler will have Ethan’s pregnant girlfriend Nora (Carson) killed.

The film has its exciting sequences, but as Carson explains, “The nice thing is that there’s such comedy woven throughout, which is what makes it so funny and entertaining.”

“Unfortunately, most of my scenes weren’t with Jason. Most of my scenes were sadder and tragic. So for me it wasn’t a big break in character,” he said progeny The actress tells PEOPLE when asked if Bateman and Egerton, 35, ever caused her to break up while filming.

She also praises the latter as “a great actor,” adding, “He plays the role so perfectly, and the film is beautiful because it’s so deeply relatable.”

“It’s intentionally not a particularly elegant action film. “Ethan is an everyman and finds himself in an extraordinary situation,” says Carson. “It’s just so cool the way it was done. And I think people are going to enjoy it so much.”
