Some colleges and schools in Georgia are closing Friday as the storm approaches

Several school districts and colleges in the Atlanta area and across north Georgia are considering cancellations or digital classes later this week as the National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning for the region Friday morning.

The Polk County school system posted a message on its website Wednesday morning that it will move to a “learn from home day” on Friday. All extracurricular activities/sports events for Friday and Saturday will be postponed and rescheduled at a later date.

“We apologize for any inconvenience, but we will always make decisions in the best interest of our students and staff and keep safety as our top priority,” officials said in the statement.

Here are some important things to have ready before a severe weather event occurs.

Gordon County announced Wednesday afternoon that it will close its schools Friday. “Students will bring home any missing assignments, including work for their reading logs, spelling, vocabulary, or other class work to complete if they have not already done so in school,” the district said.

The Atlanta University Center Consortium has scheduled remote surgeries for Friday. The consortium includes Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse and Spelman Colleges, and the Morehouse School of Medicine.

Clayton County school officials released a message asking parents and guardians to make sure children are warmly dressed for the predicted inclement weather. “District Facilities Services teams should also consider this weather outlook and prepare accordingly,” they said. Clayton urged parents and guardians to continue to monitor the website for updates.

Other school districts, such as Barrow, Forsyth and Gordon, said on their websites that they will closely monitor the forecast and make decisions as necessary.

The University of Georgia and Georgia Tech said they will announce decisions about campus operations on Friday. School districts in Atlanta, Hall and Towns counties also said they will announce a decision Thursday about their plans for Friday.

The Cherokee County School District said it is monitoring the forecast, but due to the wind chill factor, officials have decided to move students’ outdoor activities indoors. The Fulton County school system also announced it is canceling extracurricular activities and sports on Friday.

To prepare for the storm, Dalton City Schools encouraged families experiencing food insecurity or needing assistance to visit its website to view a list of available food resources.
