Sonic 3 Post-Credits Scenes Explained: Meet the New Characters

Warning: This article contains spoilers from Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Jeff Fowler, the director of the Sonic the Hedgehog Movies, previously teased Weekly entertainment how the end of its third part heralds the introduction of new characters, similar to the last two films. However, this time we did it two Newbies instead of one – plus a returning face.

“It’s fun to watch the fan debates online about who’s next and who’s going to be teased at the end of the movie,” Fowler said in an interview with EW in November. “We have a lot of the same conversations. We all have our favorites on the filmmaking side and we all make good arguments that it should be this or that.” It’s fun to keep that anticipation going.

The first Sonic the Hedgehog (2020) announced the arrival of Tails (voiced by Colleen O’Shaughnessey) with a post-credits scene. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), which also gave us Knuckles (Idris Elba), gave us a glimpse of Shadow (Keanu Reeves). Now, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (now in theaters) revealed Metal Sonic and Amy Rose in one fell swoop Sonic the Hedgehog 4.

After Shadow joins Team Sonic long enough to sacrifice himself to stop Gerald Robotnik’s (Jim Carrey) world-destroying plan, the Blue Blur (Ben Schwartz) decides to start another race to prove himself as the fastest hedgehog – a reference to an earlier scene in the film. However, in the mid-credits scene he goes overboard and finds himself in an unknown forest where he is ambushed by a swarm of Metal Sonics.

Metal Sonic is another character from the long-running Sega video game series. The Android first appeared in 1993 Sonic CD for the Sega CD console as a militarized robot created by Dr. Ivo Robotnik was created to emulate Sonic’s abilities. Like Sonic’s own personalized Terminators, the Metal Sonic army sets its sights on the hero and completely overwhelms him…

…until…a hooded figure wielding a giant hammer appears out of nowhere and makes quick work of the bots. Who is this character?

Sega Amy Rose

She removes her shell and reveals herself as Amy Rose, another character first introduced in Sonic CD. Amy Rose appears as a pink hedgehog whose main weapon is the Piko Piko Hammer. The character does not speak in the film and casting will likely be announced at a later date.

In the games, Amy Rose is always energetic and has a fairly strong love obsession with Sonic, who usually does not reciprocate this affection. So we can expect at least some form of this from whoever plays the character.

The actual post-credits scene doesn’t introduce a third new character, but it does bring back one who is presumably dead.

The sequence begins at what looks like a meteorite crash site on Earth, except that it wasn’t space rock that collided with the ground, but rather shadows. We don’t see the black hedgehog’s face with red stripes, but we do see his hands grasp the golden ringlets he wore around his wrists earlier in the film.

It’s a family film series after all! The dead hero cannot be The dead. And now there’s another new hedgehog who can fight alongside Team Sonic in the future. The Sonic family continues to grow.

Paramount Pictures officially announced Sonic the Hedgehog 4 a day before the third film hit theaters. The fourth part is now scheduled to hit cinemas in spring 2027. It’s a good thing Shadow is back alongside Amy Rose’s introduction, because Sonic will need a little more power when facing an army of his fellow Androids.
