Sony’s Spider-Man universe is reportedly done as Kraven the Hunter aims for a worse opening than Madame Web

Sony is reportedly abandoning its Spider-Man universe, which includes ever-popular films like “Venom” and “Morbius,” because Kraven the Hunter is expected to have a worse opening weekend than the disastrous “Madame Web.”

A leading talent agent told The Wrap that Sony has “developed what they want to develop now” and is instead focusing on the next real Spider-Man film under Marvel Studios, which has been confirmed to begin filming in 2025 by star Tom Holland.

Kraven the Hunter, the latest and possibly final entry in Sony’s Spider-Man universe, arrives on December 13th and is expected to appear just as modest as previous offerings. As Deadline reports, the film is only targeting $13 million to $15 million at the box office on its opening weekend. For comparison, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” grossed $587.2 million in its weekend debut.

Although final numbers won’t be announced until next week, that would put Kraven the Hunter under the $17.6 million opening weekend performance of Madame Web, which sets records as the worst opening ever for a Sony Spider-Man film broke and the first Marvel film since Fox’s Fantastic Four was rebooted to avoid opening at number one.

Kraven the Hunter stars Kick Ass and Bullet Train actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the titular villain, a skilled hunter who targets Spider-Man after defeating all other prey in the animal kingdom. Its director JC Chandor asked fans to give Kraven the Hunter a chance.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe officially includes six films: Venom, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, Morbius, Madame Web, Venom: The Last Dance and soon Kraven the Hunter. Only one of these has scored higher than 5/10 in IGN’s review so far, with Venom: Let There Be Carnage receiving a 7/10. The rest managed between 4/10 and 5/10.

Sony can at least look forward to the aforementioned Spider-Man 4. It will be released on July 24, 2026 as a sequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe trilogy, again starring Holland. It could even be that Miles Morales will be introduced into the MCU, something Holland is personally invested in.
