Sources – Sacramento St. discusses hiring Michael Vick as coach

Sacramento State is negotiating to hire former NFL sensation Mike Vick as its new head coach, sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Monday.

According to Schefter, Sacramento State plans to move up to FBS, is building a new stadium and has net assets of over $50 million.

According to the Virginian-Pilot, Vick also interviewed at Norfolk State for the head coaching position. Vick’s hometown of Newport News, Virginia, is not far from Norfolk State’s campus.

The Sacramento State job opened after Andy Thompson, who had been the Hornets’ head coach the past two seasons, moved to Stanford to take an associate head coaching job. The Hornets finished 3-9 this season and 11th in the Big Sky.

Vick led the Hokies to the 1999 national title game, where they lost to Florida State 46-29. In the 2001 NFL Draft, the Falcons made him the first black quarterback, selected No. 1 overall.

However, at the height of his NFL career, Vick served 18 months in prison for funding a dogfighting operation.

Vick, 44, was released from federal prison in 2009 after pleading guilty and serving his sentence for his role in the dogfighting ring. The case turned his on-field fame on its head at a time when he was the poster boy of modern football. Vick made a comeback after being released by the Philadelphia Eagles, but his best years were behind him. He officially retired from the league in 2017 and made combating animal cruelty part of his mission.

Since his retirement, he has been an NFL analyst for Fox Sports.
