South Africa will qualify for the final of the World Test Championship by beating Pakistan

South Africa had the edge for most of the first three days but started the fourth day 27-3 with their hopes still hanging in the balance.

The experienced pair of Bavuma and Aiden Markram calmed nerves early on until Abbas bowled Markram for 37 for his first wicket of the fourth day.

Abbas, with his impeccable lines and lengths, bowled the 30.3 overs of the game either side of lunch on a lively pitch.

The Proteas’ innings fell into major conflict after Bavuma was caught behind by the seamer for 40 minutes, although replays suggested the ball went into his pocket rather than his bat, potentially saving the South African captain if he got out would have decided to review.

Naseem Shah then bowled Kyle Verreynne for a two count and Abbas left David Bedingham and Corbin Bosch in the next over.

At this point, South Africa needed another 49 with two wickets remaining when Rabada joined all-rounder Jansen.

First, the two reached lunch at 116-8, calming the drama somewhat. Rabada then played the decisive hand.

The left-hander attacked and fell four of his five fours after the break.

This got South Africa back on track and when Jansen put the winning streak behind them there were scenes of celebration in the stands and obvious emotions from the players.

“There wasn’t a lot of conversation,” Bavuma said when asked about the situation over lunch. “I was still sulking on the toilet. I came out when we needed about 15 runs. It was a tough time.”
