South Bend welcomes fans before the playoff game between IU and Notre Dame

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – At a time when the city is usually aglow with holiday lights, South Bend is illuminated by playoff lights.

We’re less than a day away from the College Football Playoff game between Notre Dame and Indiana and there’s plenty of green downtown.

There are countless places with lights and decorations around the city, but a popular destination is the local hotels. Over at the Aloft Hotel on Main Street, they’re completely booked for the weekend and guests are greeted with a warm Irish welcome.

Aloft normally welcomes fans to Notre Dame home games, but of course this game looks different. This time the hotel has cool boxes for your cold drinks, pompoms and large green shamrock balloons.

Esmeralda Cervantes, the front desk manager at Aloft, said the energy has been high lately as fans have come to the game no matter who they are cheering for.

“There is no boredom. As soon as you get to the door, you’re already tapping into the energy you’re receiving,” Cervantes says. “It doesn’t matter what team they’re against or what they’re going for, everyone kind of comes together, everyone celebrates and has the same feelings during these times.”

When it comes to people flying in or driving in and staying at the hotel, Cervantes says the majority of the crowd will likely be here before game day.

“We actually expect them to arrive today. A lot of them come in today,” she says. “There are a few people who are coming tomorrow, they actually want to get up early and check in, so we’ll see how that goes, but for the most part they’re all arriving today.”

The Aloft Hotel has bus route information for arriving fans, however this bus information is different for this rare Friday night home game.

For the free Game Day Express bus, the first stop is directly at the Aloft Hotel, then the Century Center, the DoubleTree, followed by the final destination: McKenna Hall on the Notre Dame campus.
