South Korean police are considering a travel ban for President Yoon as part of a martial law investigation

SEOUL and NEW YORK – South Korean police will consider imposing a travel ban on President Yoon Suk Yeol, a senior official said at a news conference on Monday local time.

Additionally, they have not ruled out questioning Yoon as part of their ongoing investigation into the illegality of last week’s declaration of martial law, the official said.

“There are no human or physical limitations on the subject of the investigation,” said Woo Jong-soo, a senior police official in charge of the martial law investigation, before outlining the scope of the current investigation.

He explained that 120 members of the security investigation division were initially assigned to investigate five reports related to Yoon’s imposition of martial law on December 3.

As of Sunday, about 150 people were working on the investigative team he led, he said.

So far, the team has “carried out searches and seizures at the office, official residence and home of former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun, a key suspect in the case,” Woo said, adding that investigators were also interviewing key witnesses, including the National Electoral Commission and the Ministry of National Defense.

“Going forward, we plan to closely examine the decision-making process surrounding the declaration of martial law, the damage to the National Assembly and the National Election Commission, and the police actions,” Woo said.

“In addition, we will focus on proving the allegations through forensic analysis of the seized items and analysis of call recordings,” he added.

Woo also explained that his team, which he described as the “principal investigator of the crime of sedition,” feels a great sense of responsibility and therefore promised the public: “We will conduct the investigation thoroughly and without any doubt.”

He explained that they would do this by “mobilizing all available resources in accordance with laws and principles.”
