Southern California fire map: Palisades fire, Eaton fire, Hurst fire, Woodley fire forcing thousands to evacuate

Four fast-spreading wildfires are spreading across communities in the greater Los Angeles area. Strong winds have dramatically increased the risk of wildfires in the next few days.

Palisade fire

A wildfire in Pacific Palisades has grown to more than 3,000 acres and is forcing area residents to evacuate their homes. The fire is 0% contained.

The Los Angeles Fire Department has issued a mandatory evacuation order for the following zones:

DRY-U026-A, LOS-Q0767, MAL-C111-A, MAL-C111-B, MAL-C112-B, MTN-U028, RMB-U030-A, RMB-U030-B, RMB-U030-D, RRC-U027, SAN-Q1395-B, SAN-Q1396-B, SDP-U029, SSM-U010-A, SSM-U010-B, TOP-U001, TOP-U002, TOP-U003, TOP-U004, TOP-U005, TOP-U006, TOP-U007, TOP-U008, TOP U009

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, the evacuation area for the Palisades Fire has been expanded to east Kenter Avenue and north to Mulholland Road.

Evacuation orders extend south to Pacific Coast Highway and west to Topanga Canyon Boulevard.

Eaton Fire

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for parts of Pasadena due to the Eaton Fire, which has now grown to 2,227 acres. This fire is currently 0% contained.

The initial evacuation order was issued for the area east of Allen Avenue, north of Washington Boulevard and west of Sierra Madre Villa Avenue. Evacuations were later expanded to the area north of Orange Grove/Rosemead Boulevard, east of Lake Avenue and west of Michillinda Avenue.

These include the following zones:

An evacuation center was set up at the Pasadena Civic Center at 300 East Green Street.

Hurst fire

The Hurst fire has grown to 505 acres and is forcing residents to evacuate their homes. This fire is currently 0% contained.

Mandatory evacuations have been ordered for communities north of I-210 to the intersection of I-5 and Route 14.

This area includes the following zones:

LAC-E119-B, LAC-E132-A, LAC-E132-B, LOS-E001

Woodley Fire

The Woodley fire ignited Wednesday morning and quickly grew to 75 acres. There is a fire near North Woodley Avenue in the Sepulveda Basin.

The flames are being driven south by strong winds. Cal Fire reports that the fire poses a threat to crossing Burbank Boulevard.

“Emergency crews are actively working to contain the fire and protect structures in the affected area,” Cal Fire said.

Strong winds are driving fires in Southern California

The flames were driven by Santa Ana winds with speeds exceeding 60 miles per hour in some places. Winds were expected to increase overnight, producing isolated gusts of over 100 miles per hour in mountains and foothills – including areas that have not seen significant rain in months.

The winds are acting as an “atmospheric hairdryer” for vegetation, bringing a long fire threat that could spread to the more populated lower hills and valleys, according to Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, according to the National Center for Fire Atmospheric research

Red Flag Warnings are in effect for the Malibu Coast, Santa Monica Mountains Recreation Area, San Gabriel Valley, San Fernando Valley, Calabasas, Santa Clarita Valley, San Gabriel Mountains, etc. and will remain until 6 p.m. Thursday p.m. in effect the 5 Freeway and 14 Freeway corridors.

The weather service warned of possible power outages and overturned large trucks, trailers and RVs. Strong offshore gusts will also bring dangerous conditions off the coasts of Orange and Los Angeles counties, including Catalina Island, and local airports could experience delays and turbulence.

The utilities said they are considering preemptively cutting power to about half a million customers in eight counties starting Tuesday. In recent years, California utilities have routinely shut down power lines as a precaution against weather conditions that could damage equipment and cause a fire.
